In my April Sew Sampler monthly quilt box I received the most beautiful fabric! If you don’t already know, this curated quilt box is a subscription through the Fat Quarter shop and you can see my unboxing in the post HERE.

At first I was going to use the pattern that came with that box, but then I changed my mind and decided to do my own thing!

For this pattern you will need 61 patterned Jolly Bars. I am using the At Home Jolly Bars designed by Bonnie and Camille for Moda Fabrics. You will need 2 packages of Jolly bars. I just went through and picked out the 61 Jolly bars that I wanted to use for my design.

I was set on the design layout, however, at first I was going to place my patterned fabric in a random layout. Then I decided to group everything by color scheme and was thrilled with how it turned out! You will also notice on my finished quilt top that I was able to start with lighter fabric on the outside edges of the quilt and gradually got darker as I worked into the middle of the quilt!

Quick half square triangles using Jolly Bars

People often ask me how I am able to make so many quilts. Well, after all these years I have learned how to work really efficiently. I can usually cut fabric pretty fast, which helps. Chain piecing also makes things move along swiftly. And with this quilt, I used pre cuts and a little trick to quickly make my half square triangles!

I was able to piece this entire quilt in two days!

So, here is what you do…. and this is honestly the most time consuming part. You will mark the back of your background Jolly bars down the center of your rectangle at the 5″ mark. Now that the bar is marked into two squares you will mark corner to corner of each square. Your background bars should look like the image below.

After you have all of your background pieces marked you will place two of your bars right sides together and sew a 1/4″ seam on each side of your angled mark lines. You do no sew along your marked center line!

I would recommend pairing your background bars with your At Home Jolly bars first. Then your last 22 background bars will make your 44 all background half square triangles.

After you have sewn all of your bars it is time to cut them into the half square triangles!

Cut along all of your marked lines. Make sure you don’t cut through any of your stitches!

From each set of sewn bars you will get 4 half square triangles!

Press your seams and square your half square triangles if needed.

Planning and Sewing

For this quilt design you will likely want to plan out your quilt before sewing. This will help you keep everything organized.

After planing piece your quilt together in the way you are most comfortable.

I like to chain piece in rows.

I like to use alphabities to keep organized. I mark the start of each row with the letters in this pack.
