I absolutely love quilt patterns that are created from one block and that look complicated, but are super easy to piece. This layer cake pattern, I think, fits that perfectly.
So, here is the quilt block. It looks like there are a lot of small pieces, and while there are, it is constructed much easier than it looks.

Fabric Requirements
- Layer cake (42 a 10” squares)
- 2 yards of background fabric
Cutting
From the background fabric cut
- 84 – 1.5″ x 10″ strips
- 84 – 1.5″ x 11″ strips
I put together a few charts to assist in cutting the fabric efficiently.

Piecing the Block
Piecing this block is so so easy! I love making these blocks and I think I will use this pattern to use up a few more of my Layer Cakes!
First cut two 2″ strips from the same side of a 10″ square.

Keep the strips you cut in order and place a 1.5″ x 10″ strip of background fabric between them.

Sew the strips in place using a 1/4″ seam allowance. I press the seams open to reduce bulk.

Next you will do the same thing in the other direction using the 11″ background strips.
After pressing the seams open trim the block into a 10.5″ square. I give some tips on trimming in my YouTube Video Tutorial.

Look at this design when the blocks start to come together! I just love the look! Leave me a comment letting me know what you think of it!

Layout the Quilt Top
When you finish all of the 42 blocks lay them out getting a design you love. Sew the rows together to complete the top! Press the seams then Baste, Quilt, and Bind as desired!

Thank you for subscribing! You are right! I looked back and I forgot to put measurements of the finished quilt! It finishes at about 60”x70”!

I love plaid. Can’t wait to try it out!
Today was the first time I’ve seen one of your videos. I just love this plaid quilt. Is there any way to get the pattern? I’ve tried everything that your readers have suggested with no luck. I subscribed today, can’t wait to see more of your stuff.
First, thank you for subscribing Suzanne. A lot of people have asked so I will try to work on putting together a pdf this weekend to make this easier for everyone.
I’ve found a way to print the pattern. Under the subscribe button, there are 3 rectangular buttons. Tap the more button and in the drop down box tap the print. Worked great for me. Good luck…
